Sometimes I wonder where their brains went….

I need to start blogging more, I know I know.  And I actually have lots of potential posts, I just never feel motivated to write. And so, tonight as I was grading work, a couple answers made me laugh enough to want to share with you.

From a vocabulary test:

Question:  Please write the question we can ask in order to determine if a word is an adjective?

Student Answer:  The green horse ate big hard carrots for lunch

Correct Answer, which came directly off a study handout:   "What kind of noun is it?"

Where the student got that answer I have NO idea, but it made me smile.

From vocabulary homework.  They were supposed to use one of their vocabulary words from “The Crucible” in a correct sentence.  My student wrote:

Vocab Word:  Ameliorate

Student Sentence:  Elected President Barack Obama says he will ameliorate this country.

Hope those made you smile, they sure made me!

  1. It did make me smile, because it reminded me of my students when I taught high school. They wouldn’t read the whole question, they would just glance at it, pick up a word or two, and scribble an answer. That’s what your first student did. He saw the word “adjective” and immediaely banged out a sentence with as many adjectives as he could squueze in.

  2. Yes, I had to smile too. When grading papers, a little humor goes a long way.

  3. Brains? What brains? (Just kidding, of course!)

  4. I love reading posts like this! I can never share any of my own, since 90% of what we do in class from August to March involves multiple choice responses. Maybe in the spring I’ll have a few good green horse stories. :-)
